The King had a peaceful approach to world relations that entailed respect and friendship with countries, regardless of external politics.  He advocated that the ‘Friendly Isles’ be friendly with all nations.  In this sense, He was a true diplomat and Monarch, elevating principles of peace, understanding and respect above political differences.

In an official letter of condolences, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China reflected on the wisdom of the late King normalizing Tonga-China relations over eight years ago.  The condolence letter states, “His Majesty King Taufa’ahau Tupou IV was an outstanding leader of the Kingdom of Tonga and devoted his life to the maintenance of the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Tonga.” The Minister goes on to explain that the great headway made in Tonga-China relations under the late King’s care: “Will never be forgotten by the peoples of our two countries”.

Tact and diplomacy was a hallmark of the late Monarch’s style and manner.  The late King’s legal training assisted Him immensely in technical aspects of His role.   He was renowned for being calm and reflective regardless of the issues raised or discussed.

The King was known for his policy of universal friendship.  As a Christian Monarch, he had a vision of peace.  In His death, this legacy of upholding principles of peace over political dissent continues.  Significantly, Hon. Laisenia Qarase and Hon. Mahendra Choudry, travelled overseas together, for the first time, to attend His Majesty’s funeral.  This historic joint journey by the two leaders of Fiji’s divided ethnic communities; shows that the late King’s legacy of peace and understanding continues on beyond his death.
